Weather tomorrow, September 21: IMD forecasts heavy rain, strong winds in 13 states; check state-wise alerts

IMD weather forecast September 21: Several parts of India are likely to see heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds on Monday, September 21, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). A weather system over the Bay of Bengal is strengthening and is expected to influence weather conditions across southern, eastern and central parts of the country.

The IMD has issued rainfall and thunderstorm warnings for several states, including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and Odisha. Coastal Andhra Pradesh is under warnings for heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds on September 21.

Here is the state-wise weather forecast and alert for September 21.


South India: Heavy rain and thunderstorms

Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, and Telangana.

Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema and parts of Karnataka may also experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds. Winds could reach 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh is likely to remain particularly wet, with IMD warnings for heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds on September 21. Very heavy rainfall has also been forecast in the region for September 22 and 23.

Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep

Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is expected over Coastal Karnataka, North Interior Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe, and Lakshadweep.

Kerala could receive heavy showers over the next few days, with thunderstorms also possible at isolated places. The IMD has issued a yellow alert in parts of the state.

A yellow alert indicates the possibility of heavy rainfall in the range of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm.

East India: Rainfall activity to increase

Odisha and Andaman & Nicobar Islands

The developing Bay of Bengal system is expected to increase rainfall activity over the eastern coast. Heavy rain is forecast at isolated places over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and coastal Odisha.

The weather system is moving towards the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast and is expected to strengthen further.

West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand

Isolated to scattered rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely over Jharkhand, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal.

Gangetic West Bengal is also under a thunderstorm, lightning and squall warning for September 21, according to the IMD's latest regional warning.

Central India: Rain and thunderstorms

Fairly widespread rainfall, along with thunderstorms and lightning, is expected over Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh.

Chhattisgarh may receive isolated heavy rainfall, while other parts of the region could see intermittent showers and thunderstorms.

West India: Showers likely in Konkan and Goa

Fairly widespread rainfall is expected over Konkan and Goa, while parts of Madhya Maharashtra may also receive rain.

Some areas could witness thunderstorms during the period.

Northeast India: Scattered rain and lightning

Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh may receive isolated to scattered rainfall accompanied by lightning.

Weather activity is expected to remain intermittent across the northeastern states.

Bay of Bengal: Strong winds expected

The developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal is likely to bring rougher conditions over the sea.

Wind speeds over the Eastcentral and adjoining Northeast Bay of Bengal are expected to reach 45-55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, on September 21 as the system strengthens.

The developing system has already prompted increased weather activity along parts of the eastern and southern coasts.

Kerala rainfall deficit

Despite the current spell of rain, Kerala has experienced a rainfall deficit during this year's monsoon season. IMD data cited in the latest reports showed the state had received 28% less rainfall than normal between June 1 and September 17.

The coming showers are therefore expected to provide some relief from the recent heat and weather-related disruptions.
