Weather tomorrow: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall activity across several parts of the country on Sunday, June 28, with heavy to extremely heavy rain expected in parts of eastern, northeastern, western and southern India. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also likely in many states, while parts of Uttar Pradesh remain under a heatwave alert despite the advancing southwest monsoon.

IMD weather forecast for June 28, Sunday

According to the IMD, extremely heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Sunday. Meanwhile, Assam and Meghalaya are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with rain activity remaining intense across much of the Northeast.

Residents of Delhi-NCR may experience a change in weather conditions on Sunday. The IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching up to 50 kmph across Delhi and nearby regions.

Similar conditions are expected in parts of Haryana, Punjab and Uttarakhand, bringing temporary relief from recent warm and humid conditions.

Northeast India under heavy rain watch

The Northeast is expected to remain one of the wettest regions of the country over the next few days. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Assam and Meghalaya, while Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are also under a heavy rain warning.

The IMD officials have cautioned that isolated locations in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim could receive extremely heavy rainfall.

Rain likely across western and southern states

The southwest monsoon continues to stay active across western and southern India. Heavy rainfall is expected over Konkan and Goa, while thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are likely in parts of Maharashtra.

Across eastern and central India, the IMD has predicted heavy rainfall over Bihar, Odisha and Chhattisgarh. Thunderstorms with lightning are also expected in several areas.

Jharkhand may witness thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kmph, according to the weather department.

Heatwave alert remains in Uttar Pradesh

Even as monsoon rains advance across the country, parts of Uttar Pradesh continue to battle extreme heat.

The IMD has forecast:

  • Heatwave conditions over west Uttar Pradesh
  • Severe heatwave conditions in isolated parts of east Uttar Pradesh

Odisha is also likely to experience hot and humid weather conditions.

Southwest monsoon likely to advance further

The weather office said conditions remain favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance into additional parts of the country during the next three to four days.

The monsoon is expected to move into:

  • More areas of Gujarat
  • Additional parts of Madhya Pradesh
  • Remaining regions of Chhattisgarh
  • Jharkhand
  • Bihar
  • Parts of Uttar Pradesh
  • Uttarakhand
