Weather today, September 29: Heavy rain alert for Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu; check latest IMD update

India Meteorological Department has placed South Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the northeast states of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura under a heavy rain alert for September 29.

The alert comes as a deep depression over the north Andaman Sea moves closer to the Myanmar coast, according to IMD's bulletin issued at 9 pm on September 28.

Depression and Bay of Bengal weather today

IMD says the deep depression was centred close to the Myanmar coast near Kyaikto at 5.30 pm on September 28, and was expected to cross the coast within two to three hours after that. After landfall, it is likely to keep moving north-northwestwards across coastal Myanmar and the northeast Bay of Bengal towards southeast Bangladesh over the next two days. Squally winds of 45 to 55 kmph, gusting to 65 kmph, are likely along the Myanmar and Bangladesh coasts from September 29 to October 1. Fishermen are advised to stay away from the Bangladesh coast and the northeast Bay of Bengal during this period.

Jammu and Kashmir weather today

Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh and Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad saw fairly widespread rain on September 28. Today, isolated to scattered rain is likely, and IMD says the region will turn dry from September 30, with isolated rain returning briefly from October 2.

Himachal Pradesh weather today

Himachal Pradesh may see scattered rain today after isolated heavy rain on September 28. Shimla Airport recorded 6 cm of rain yesterday. Dry weather is expected in the state from September 30.

Punjab and Haryana weather today

Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi saw fairly widespread rain on September 28, with Ambala recording 4 cm. Today, both regions are likely to see only isolated rain before turning dry from September 30.

Delhi weather today

Delhi is likely to see isolated rain today, continuing the light spell from September 28. IMD expects dry weather to set in from September 30, with mainly clear skies through the first week of October.

Uttarakhand weather today

Uttarakhand had fairly widespread rain on September 28. Today, scattered rain is likely, easing further to isolated rain from September 30. The lowest minimum temperature in the country on the plains, 14.9 degrees Celsius, was recorded at Dehradun Mokampur.

Rajasthan weather today

West Rajasthan is likely to be dry today after isolated rain on September 28. East Rajasthan may see isolated rain. Phalodi recorded the country's highest maximum temperature of 39.4 degrees Celsius.

Uttar Pradesh and Bihar weather today

West Uttar Pradesh may see isolated rain today before turning dry from September 30. East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar may also see isolated rain, with dry weather expected in both from October 1.

West Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand weather today

Gangetic West Bengal, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Odisha and Jharkhand are likely to see isolated rain today, a pattern IMD expects to continue through the week in these states.

Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh weather today

West and East Madhya Pradesh may see isolated to scattered rain today. Chhattisgarh is also likely to see isolated rain, continuing into the first week of October.

Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa weather today

Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Konkan and Goa may see isolated rain today, with thunderstorm and gusty winds up to 40 to 50 kmph likely in Madhya Maharashtra. Gujarat region may also see isolated rain.

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana weather today

Andhra Pradesh may see thunderstorm with gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph and strong surface winds today. Telangana may see isolated rain, before turning dry from September 30.

Karnataka weather today

South Interior Karnataka is on heavy rain alert today, with rain expected to turn fairly widespread. Coastal Karnataka and North Interior Karnataka may see scattered rain, with thunderstorm and gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph in the interior districts.

Kerala weather today

Kerala and Mahe may see scattered rain today, with gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph. IMD says the state will move into a heavy rain and fairly widespread rain phase from September 30, continuing into October.

Tamil Nadu weather today

Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are on heavy rain alert today, with thunderstorm and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph also forecast. IMD says the heavy rain spell in the region will continue through September 30.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands weather today

Heavy rain is likely at isolated places in the islands today, along with thunderstorm and gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph. IMD says fairly widespread rain will continue before easing to scattered rain from September 30.

Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh weather today

Assam and Meghalaya are on heavy rain alert today, with isolated thunderstorm and lightning also likely. Arunachal Pradesh may see scattered rain. IMD says heavy rain will continue in Assam and Meghalaya on September 30 as well.

Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura weather today

These four northeast states are on heavy rain alert today, with isolated thunderstorm and lightning also forecast. The heavy rain spell is expected to continue into September 30.
