The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its forecast said that the rainfall in May is likely to be above the normal range, excluding some parts of east, northeast and east central India, where below-normal rainfall is expected. The southwest monsoon over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is expected around May 14-16, the IMD said.

Delhi-NCR weather today

According to the IMD forecast, Delhi is likely to see partly cloudy skies through the day, which will keep the temperature rise in check. The maximum temperature is likely to range between 38 and 41 degrees Celsius.


"Partly cloudy sky becoming generally cloudy sky towards the afternoon. A spell of very light to light rain accompanied with thunderstorm/lightning and strong winds, speed 30-40 kmph gusting to 50 kmph during afternoon to evening," IMD's forecast for May 3 reads.

For May 4, the IMD has forecast generally cloudy skies with one or two spells of very light to light rain accompanied by thunderstorms/lightning and strong winds, speed 30-40 kmph gusting to 50 kmph during the day.

Yellow alert for Kerala

The weather office has issued a yellow alert for Kerala districts, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds over the next few days. The latest IMD Kerala rain alert hints that all 14 districts are likely to receive moderate to isolated heavy rainfall, bringing partial relief from the heat.

For May 2, a yellow alert has been sounded in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur. Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha are likely to receive heavy rain on May 3, while Idukki, Palakkad and Malappuram are expected to see heavier rainfall activity on May 4.

Rain alert for May 2

On May 2, rain activity will be spread across several regions of India, the IMD's latest bulletin said. In Northwest India, places like Jammu and Kashmir may see scattered to fairly widespread rainfall or snowfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph. States such as Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan are also likely to receive isolated to scattered rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds.

In Northeast India, widespread rainfall is expected across states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, with some areas experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall.

In East India, regions like West Bengal (especially sub-Himalayan areas) and Sikkim may receive heavy to very heavy rain, while Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand are likely to see light to moderate rain with thunderstorms.

In Central India, parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh may get isolated rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds. In South India, rain is expected over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, with heavy rainfall likely over Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds across the region.

May 3 weather forecast

On May 3, rainfall activity intensifies in some regions. In Northwest India, Jammu and Kashmir will continue to receive rain/snow with thunderstorms, while Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will begin seeing fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds. A hailstorm is also likely in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Rain will continue in Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan.

In Northeast India, widespread rainfall persists across all states including Assam and Meghalaya, where heavy rainfall is likely to continue.

In East India, West Bengal and Sikkim will continue to see widespread rain, with chances of thunderstorms and strong winds. Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand will also receive light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms.

In Central India, rain with thunderstorms is expected over Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, with strong winds and possible thundersqualls in Chhattisgarh.

In South India, rainfall continues across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, with heavy rain likely over Tamil Nadu and Kerala, along with thunderstorms and gusty winds.
