The weather threat is expected to evolve over the next few days, with the heaviest rain forecast in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam before the system makes landfall. Odisha, Telangana and parts of central and eastern India are also likely to see intense showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Cyclone Arnab: Andhra Pradesh, Yanam under red alert

India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Cyclone Arnab was over the west-central Bay of Bengal on October 26 and was expected to strengthen into a very severe cyclonic storm. The system is forecast to cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, close to Yanam, by the forenoon of October 28.

The storm could bring sustained winds of 115-125 kmph, with gusts reaching 140 kmph. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall on October 27 and 28, followed by heavy rain in some areas on October 29.

IMD has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in Kakinada, Konaseema, East Godavari, West Godavari and Eluru districts, as well as Yanam. Several other Andhra Pradesh districts are under orange or yellow alerts, according to the warnings reported on October 26.

Residents in affected coastal areas should monitor local administration advisories, particularly those concerning evacuation, transport and access to vulnerable locations.
