Weather Today
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a fresh spell of rain and snowfall across Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu & Kashmir starting February 1. Residents and tourists are advised to prepare for a significant dip in temperatures over the coming days.

Current Weather in Himachal Pradesh: Warm Days, Chilly Nights

According to the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, the past 24 hours saw mostly dry conditions in Himachal Pradesh. While minimum temperatures were normal to near normal, maximum temperatures rose 2–3°C above the usual range at many stations.

Lowest temperature: Tabo, Lahaul and Spiti at -10.2°C

Highest temperature: Una at 24.2°C

These fluctuations highlight the contrast between daytime warmth and the freezing nights typical of the region during this season.

Western Disturbances to Bring Rain and Snow

The IMD reports that a western disturbance is currently over north Afghanistan, accompanied by an induced cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan. These systems are expected to trigger precipitation across northwest India:

  • February 1: Light to moderate rain and snowfall at many places
  • February 2–3: Scattered rain and snow in some areas
  • January 31 & February 6: Light rain or snowfall at isolated high-hill locations
  • February 4–5: Mostly dry weather
This sequence suggests intermittent spells of rain and snow, particularly affecting hill districts.

Sharp Temperature Drop Expected

A significant cooling trend is forecasted after February 1. The IMD warns that minimum temperatures could fall by 2–5°C, while daytime highs may drop by 4–8°C over the next 2–3 days. Residents are advised to prepare for chilly conditions, especially in the higher altitudes.

Weather Advisory: Thunderstorms, Gusty Winds, Dense Fog

The IMD has issued a weather advisory for February 1, warning of possible thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds of 40–50 kmph, occasionally reaching up to 60 kmph, in several hilly districts.

Precautions for Residents, Tourists, and Farmers

With rain, snowfall, thunderstorms, and fog predicted, the IMD advises everyone in the affected regions to:
  • Stay updated with local weather alerts
  • Avoid unnecessary travel during storms or heavy snowfall
  • Ensure livestock and crops are protected
  • Exercise caution on roads prone to fog and ice
This week’s weather is a reminder that the Himalayan region can experience sudden swings, and proper precautions can prevent accidents and losses.
