Watch video: Actor-politician Urmila Matondkar joins Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra

Actor-turned-politician Urmila Matondkar joined Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra on Tuesday morning.

Matondkar, a popular Bollywood star of the 1990s, joined Gandhi shortly after the march started from near the army garrison in Nagrota town around 8 a.m. amid tight security, with Congress workers and supporters lined up on the road along the route to welcome them.

Matondkar (48) resigned from the Congress in September 2019 after a short association of six months and joined the Shiv Sena in 2020.


She also shared a video of herself participating in the yatra with the caption "Walk for Unity, Affinity, Equality, and Fraternity."



In another video, the actress also talked about her decision to join the yatra, stating that it was about "Indian-ness" and promoting love, affection, camaraderie, and goodwill.



Dressed in a cream-coloured traditional Kashmir pheran (loose gown) and beanie cap, Matondkar was interacting with Gandhi as they marched along.

The yatra, which started from Kanyakumari on September 7, entered Jammu and Kashmir from Punjab on Thursday and reached Jammu city on Monday.

The yatra will culminate in Srinagar, where Rahul Gandhi will unfurl the tricolour on January 30. The Congress has also invited 22 opposition parties to join the culmination ceremony in Srinagar.
