Nguyen Minh Hai, a survivor, recounted his experience from his hospital bed, saying, "I was so scared when I fell down. I felt like I’d just escaped death. I can’t swim and I thought I would have died."
The collapse happened on Monday, after the typhoon's landfall on Saturday. More than 60 people have died since then, making it one of the deadliest storms in Vietnam in decades. Rescue teams are searching for 13 missing individuals, and the military is building a temporary pontoon bridge. So far, they have rescued at least three people from the river.
While part of the 375-meter bridge remains intact, the completion timeline for full repairs is uncertain. Typhoon Yagi, with winds up to 203 km/h, has caused significant damage across northern Vietnam, leaving 1.5 million people without power. Landslides and flash floods from the storm have killed at least 44 people, including a newborn.
The storm also damaged infrastructure, tearing roofs off buildings and impacting factories, like the LG Electronics factory in Hai Phong city.
