Watch the world's shortest flight. It takes a minute and 14 secs

The whole flight takes one minute 14 seconds and costs £17. That makes it the shortest flight in the world. And, going by the cost per kms travelled, it also makes it the costliest flight in the world.

Travel vlogger Noel Phillips clocked this trip on the between the islands of Papa Westray and Westray in the Scottish archipelago of Orkney, New Zealand-based website Stuff has reported.

The distance is just 2.7 km. Why do you need to fly such a short distance? Because the alternative is a 20-minute boat ride through choppy seas.


The flight by Loganair operates twice a day and can carry up to nine passengers, the report said.

Phillips' video on YouTube makes an interesting watch with the vlogger first taking a 20-minute flight by the sturdy Britten-Norman Islander from Kirkwall to Papa Westray ahead of the short hop to Westray.

Then, Phillips gets the stopwatch on his mobile phone ready as the turboprop starts rolling on the runway in Papa Westray, he gets it going exactly at wheels-up, the plane is up and over a green field and then grey choppy waters at a cruising altitude of 400 feet, Phillips tells us about how this flight is even more expensive than Emirates first class, by this time the plane is already on its approach to the Westray airport skimming low across shallow water and a thin strip of chalky coastline, touching down exactly at 1 min and 14 secs, and briefly taxiing to a stop. Flight over.

There are no boarding passes or security checks for the flight, they just call you when the flight is ready for takeoff and passengers hop in and off as casually as if they are taking a big cab.
