Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is on the Kerala leg of his Bharat Jodo Yatra, took part in a snake boat race exhibition on the Punnamada lake on Monday.

A 26-second video clip tweeted by ANI showed Gandhi and AICC general secretary KC Venugopal among those energetically rowing a chundan vallam or snake boat on the Punnamada Lake.

The Punnamada Lake in the Kuttanad region of Alappuzha district is where famous the Nehru Trophy boat race is held every year.

Gandhi, who is on the 12th day of his yatra, earlier in the morning held discussions with the fishermen community along the coast on rising fuel costs, reduced subsidies and dwindling fish stock.

Gandhi extended his support to the fishermen and said that he was aware of the problems faced by the fisher folk, an agency report said

"The government is not giving subsidies to labourers, but it is giving enough preference to the billionaires who are close with the government. Everyone should think about where the subsidy is going," he said.
