Watch: Jimmy Fallon mocks Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif over earphone fumble

He was mocked by political rivals in his country for his fumbles with the translation headphones in Samarkand. Even Russian President Vladimir Putin couldn't help an amused laugh. And now, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been made fun of on Jimmy Fallon's talk show.

It happened when the Pakistan PM was meeting Putin on the sidelines of the 22nd Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization last week.


The camera showed Sharif trying to put on the earphone while Putin patiently waited. After a few seconds of awkward messing up, Sharif called out for help, and an aide hurriedly came up to fix it. Just as it looked finally over and Putin was beginning to speak, the earphone fell down and an embarrassed Sharif tried to catch it on his lap. Putin let out a short laugh.

After rounds of mocking on social media, it was the turn of American TV anchor and comedian Jimmy Fallon. The short clip from his latest show showed him play the video clip, laughing all the while. Just as the video ends at the moment of Sharif's embarrassment, Fallon quipped: "That guy is the leader of 220 million people."

Not everyone was happy at the Pak PM being at the wrong end of a joke in another country.

"Hey@jimmyfallon- have u talked abt the devastating floods destroying Pakistan? "A nation of 220 million people" is destroyed by climate change because of YOUR country's greed & wastefulness. If u haven't donated or raised funds for us u don't get to use us as a joke," a netizen tweeted.

"Deeply offensive that@jimmyfallonchose to mock 220 million people of Pakistan for a leader allegedly put in place after US-instigated regime change, while completely ignoring the suffering caused by devastating floods & climate change. Tone-deaf much?" another user wrote.
