Watch: Huge avalanche hits Chorabari Glacier area near Kedarnath

A huge avalanche has hit one of the mountains near the Kedarnath Dham but has apparently not caused any damage.

An ANI report quoted the Rudraprayag administration as saying the avalanche occurred in the catchment of Chorabari Glacier on Thursday evening. The glacier is situated between the Kedarnath summit to the north and the town of Kedarnath to the south and covers about 6 sq km.

Rudraprayag administration officials said they are keeping an eye on the area and monitoring it. Reports said National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been rushed to the area to monitor the situation.


Chorabari Glacier is situated at a distance of about 5 km behind Kedarnath temple.

A video that is going around on social media showed a massive mass of snow sliding down the mountainside, becoming larger as it progresses

It has been raining heavily in Uttarakhand over the last few days and there is a forecast for further rains in the state the coming days.

On the same day morning, the National Highway (NH)- 109 at Rudraprayag was blocked with long queues of vehicles after a sudden landslide caused tons of rocks and soil to plunge to the road below

An orange alert for very heavy rainfall is on in Uttarakhand for the upcoming two days, senior scientist of India Metrological Department (IMD), RK Jenamani, told ANI.

"Orange alert for very heavy rainfall issued for Uttarakhand from 23rd to 25th Sept. Rain is expected to increase over western UP tomorrow," Jenamani said.

The weather forecasting agency in its All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulleting by the IMD said, "a western disturbance as a trough in mid-tropospheric westerlies run roughly, under whose influence, the current spell of rainfall is likely to continue over northwest India for next few days followed by a reduction thereafter."
