What the viral video shows
The footage, shared by the handle @gharkekalesh, captures a tense exchange on a sandy riverbank lined with parked vehicles. The woman, dressed in a black “Brooklyn New York” t-shirt, shorts, and sunglasses, is seen arguing loudly with locals and a police officer. At one point, she says, “We tourists sustain your livelihood... your money is what we're drinking!” as she gestures with her phone. Her husband, standing beside her in a lime-green tank top, repeatedly tries to calm her down and pull her away from the scene.
Onlookers and police personnel in the video point out that the location is a public and religiously sensitive area along the Ganga, where such activities are not allowed. The argument grows louder before the husband intervenes more firmly and steers her away, bringing the situation under control.
Police point to rules around the Ganga
According to visuals circulating on X, police officials present at the spot maintained that restrictions on alcohol consumption are enforced in several zones along the river.Authorities routinely monitor ghats and riverbanks to ensure compliance, especially as the town sees heavy tourist footfall throughout the year.
Social media erupts with strong reactions
The video quickly gained traction, clocking lakhs of views, thousands of likes, and a flood of comments. Most users criticised the woman’s tone and what they saw as a sense of entitlement. One user wrote: “This intoxication is not because of alcohol. This is the intoxication of money and power. They feel they can get away with anything. The law has its limitations, the divine does not need any laws. When the divine strikes the earth will collapse from under your feet. Beware.”
A third user added: “Wow! A tourist's wallet apparently purchases not just local services, but also immunity from basic civic responsibilities.”
Another wrote: “Once and for all, end this nonsense that ‘if we don’t come, you won’t have food.’ Stop the entitlement. No one called you, you came by choice. This is someone’s home, not something you bought with a few bucks.”
Calls for stricter action also surfaced. One user said: “Either check them thoroughly, register belongings, or ban such tourists completely. These behaviours are dangerous.”
The bigger picture: tourism vs local culture
Rishikesh, often called the gateway to the Himalayas and a global hub for yoga and spirituality, attracts lakhs of visitors every year. But incidents like this highlight a growing friction, between those who arrive seeking leisure and those who want to preserve the sanctity of the place. As the video continues to circulate, it has left many online asking a simple question, does being a tourist allow someone to overlook local rules and sensitivities?
Judging by the reaction online, the answer from the internet is a firm no.
