Watch: Deepak Chahar does not do a 'mankad'; and sparks a meme fest

Two weeks after Deepti Sharma famously ran out English batter Charlie Dean at the non-striker's end and sparked a furious debate, India men's team pacer Deepak Chahar stopped short of doing so and sparked a meme fest

It was during the third T20I against South Africa at Indore, when Chahar ran in to bowl the first ball of the 16th over.

He completed his bowling action without delivering the ball to catch Tristan Stubbs backing up too far at the non-striker's end. But unlike Deepti Sharma, or Ravichandran Ashwin from a few years ago, Chahar did not dislodge the bails and run Stubbs out.


Chahar stood at the crease and playfully threatened to throw the ball at the stumps, made eye contact with Stubbs who gratefully rushed back in, and they both grinned. Captain Rohit Sharma stood with a smile on his face.



The mode of dismissal - called 'mankading' after the iconic Indian allrounder Vinoo Mankad who did it first at the international level back in 1947-48 - was in the news recently when India women's team offspinner Deepti Sharma used it to run out Charlie Dean and win the third ODI against England. Most players and experts backed Sharma, but some players from abroad thought it was infra dig.

Many referenced the Deepti Sharma incident as they talked about what Chahar did.


After Vinoo Mankad in 47-48, the great Kapil Dev 'mankaded' Gary Kirsten in the 2nd ODI in 1992 after the South African batter did not heed his repeated warnings to stay in his crease. Then in IPL 2019, offspinner R Ashwin ran out Jos Buttler the same way and has since been loudly advocating the practice. Buttler never seems to have forgiven him for that, though they now play for the same franchise. Inevitably, some of the memes starred Ashwin.
