The quake was centred about 125 kilometres east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and struck at a depth of roughly 19 kilometres, according to official sources. It triggered tsunami waves up to 4 metres high, causing immediate damage in several areas and prompting evacuation orders.

Russia’s emergency services instructed residents in coastal towns to leave their homes. In Severo-Kurilsk, a small community south of the epicentre, people were told to move to safer ground.
“Today’s earthquake was the strongest in decades,” said Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov in a recorded message shared by Reuters.
Authorities in eastern Russia had already warned residents to “stay away from the coast” following the initial alert.
Russia Earthquake: Japan and the US issue alerts
The impact wasn’t limited to Russia. Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued tsunami warnings, stating that waves up to 3 metres could strike its northern and eastern coastline, possibly reaching as far south as Wakayama, near Osaka. NHK, the national broadcaster, confirmed that a 30-centimetre wave had already reached Hokkaido and warned that stronger waves might follow.The earthquake’s epicentre was roughly 250 kilometres from Hokkaido, putting large stretches of the Japanese coast on edge. Evacuation advisories were not immediate, but local officials urged caution.
“Due to a massive earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean, a Tsunami Warning is in effect for those living in Hawaii. A Tsunami Watch is in effect for Alaska and the Pacific Coast of the United States. Japan is also in the way. Please visit tsunami.gov/ for the latest information. STAY STRONG AND STAY SAFE!” wrote US President Donald Trump on his Truth Social account.

Visual evidence emerges
On social media platform X, users shared video footage showing water pushing through towns and overwhelming parts of Severo-Kurilsk. Some clips showed before-and-after stills of the area taken from a height, clearly displaying how the water had surged inland. Hindustan Times noted that it could not independently verify the footage.Despite the uncertainty around full damage assessments, the visuals have heightened concern across the region.
Pacific Ring of Fire: A volatile region on alert
Kamchatka and the surrounding region sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for frequent volcanic and seismic activity. Earthquakes of this scale are not unprecedented, but such intensity remains rare.Wednesday’s quake follows a string of seismic events in the area, keeping local and international emergency services on high alert. Scientists are watching for aftershocks, while coastal authorities urge people to stay informed and ready.
For now, large parts of Russia, Japan, and the United States remain braced for further waves or tremors. The next few hours are crucial.
