For many aspiring soldiers, wearing the iconic black uniform of the National Security Guard (NSG), popularly known as the Black Cats, is the ultimate dream. Established as India’s elite counter-terrorism force, the NSG is renowned for its unmatched skill, precision, and courage in the most high-stakes operations.

If you are aiming to join this prestigious force in 2025, here is everything you need to know about the eligibility criteria, selection process and training that transforms recruits into India’s frontline commandos.

Eligibility Criteria for NSG Commando 2025

The NSG does not conduct direct recruitment. Instead, commandos are selected on deputation from the Indian Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).

Candidates must fulfil the following criteria:
  • Service experience: At least three years of service in the Army, Navy, Air Force or in CAPFs such as CRPF, BSF, ITBP, or CISF.
  • Age limit: Must be below 35 years of age.
  • Education: A graduate degree from a recognised university.
  • Fitness: Must be in excellent physical and mental health.

Selection Process

Unlike regular recruitment drives, the NSG selection process is highly selective and begins with obtaining the consent of candidates. Those who volunteer and are shortlisted are then put through one of the most demanding training programmes in the world.

Phase One: Basic Training

The first phase focuses on mental toughness, stamina and endurance. Recruits are trained in:

  • Unarmed combat
  • Use of advanced weaponry
  • Survival skills
  • Psychological resilience under extreme pressure

This phase is deliberately designed to push candidates beyond their limits.

Phase Two: Specialised Training

In the second phase, candidates are prepared for real-world scenarios through rigorous drills, including:
  • Hostage rescue missions
  • Counter-terrorism operations
  • Bomb detection and disposal
  • Precision sniper shooting
  • Urban and rural warfare tactics
The training culminates in a simulated live operation to test their preparedness.

The Making of a Black Cat

Only those who pass every stage of training are awarded the honour of becoming an NSG Commando. The role demands unwavering discipline, unmatched physical strength and absolute mental resilience.
