A pre-dawn fire in a four-storey building in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar turned into a tragedy on Sunday morning, claiming nine lives. Iron grills sealing windows and a locked terrace left residents with no escape route as flames spread rapidly through the upper floors. The incident has once again highlighted serious safety lapses in residential buildings across the capital.

How the Building Became a Death Trap

According to officials, quoted by TOI, the fire broke out around 3:45 am on the second floor and quickly spread to the third and fourth floors. Most residents were asleep when the blaze started. Protective iron grills on the front facade and a locked terrace made rescue extremely difficult.
A senior police official told TOI, “Because some people were unable to open the lock, they lost their lives.”

Fire Officials Face Major Challenges

Fire teams reached the spot with 14 engines, but faced major hurdles. A fire official told TOI, “When our team arrived, we discovered that it was a four-storey building fitted with protective grills on the front facade, which made it difficult to gain entry and evacuate the occupants.”
The darkness of early morning added to the chaos during the rescue operation.

Victims and Rescue Efforts

Fifteen people were successfully rescued and shifted to nearby hospitals. The bodies of the nine deceased have been sent to GTB Hospital mortuary for identification and post-mortem.
The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, but initial reports point to a possible short circuit.

Safety Concerns Raised

The incident has sparked fresh concerns about fire safety norms in Delhi’s residential buildings. Many older structures have similar iron grills and inadequate emergency exits, turning potential fire incidents into tragedies.

Authorities have appealed to residents to ensure proper maintenance of electrical wiring and keep emergency exits accessible at all times.
