Conjunctivitis occurs due to the inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin membrane that covers the white part of the eye. The infection is contagious and can spread rapidly from one individual to the other.
A new study conducted by the Tear Science Lab at Narayana Nethralaya, Bengaluru, has unveiled a significant association between low vitamin D levels, allergies, and the likelihood of experiencing severe conjunctivitis. This pioneering tear-based research is poised to revolutionize the approach to conjunctivitis treatment, prompting experts to reevaluate their strategies.

The study, which included a sample of conjunctivitis patients, showed an unexpected link between low vitamin D levels and the severity of the illness. Surprisingly, 92% of participants had low levels of vitamin D, with some having levels as low as 5, compared to the recommended range of around 30.

"When vitamin D levels plummet to such depths, the immune response within the eye becomes compromised. This weakened immunity causes an unusual viral response, resulting in a strong inflammatory response and severe conjunctivitis, which might prevent patients from even opening their eyes," explains Dr. Rohit Shetty, Chairman of Narayana Nethralaya in Bengaluru.


Furthermore, the study found that between 57% and 60% of participants with conjunctivitis had allergies, emphasizing the importance of allergens as a contributory factor in the condition's worsening.

The medical community has been witnessing a marked upswing in conjunctivitis cases across the nation over the past few weeks. "Our four centers are witnessing an influx of nearly 100 patients daily, a significant surge compared to recent times," acknowledges the doctor.

Primarily caused by the Adeno virus, conjunctivitis transmission typically occurs through contact and bodily fluids. Notably, patients have reported symptoms such as swelling, excessive tearing, and corneal ulcers. The pervasiveness of the condition has even impacted infants, presenting an additional challenge in comprehending the unusual characteristics of the outbreak.

Drawing inspiration from the cytokine storm experienced during the Covid era, the researchers embarked on an investigation into similar cytokine alterations transpiring within the eye during conjunctivitis. Cytokines, integral to regulating the immune system and blood cells, can trigger a potentially life-threatening systemic inflammatory syndrome if their levels become excessively elevated, culminating in a cytokine storm.

According to Dr. Shetty, some cytokine-related parameters are not directly linked to the virus. These discoveries not only shed light on the complex systems that drive conjunctivitis, but they also have far-reaching consequences for treatment paradigms. As researchers continue to decipher the complicated interplay of vitamin D deficiency, allergens, and cytokines in acute conjunctivitis, the medical world is on the verge of a paradigm change in understanding and managing this disease.
