One of the most eagerly anticipated ideas among cricket fans has always been a biopic on Virat Kohli, a cinematic portrayal of India’s cricketing superstar and his extraordinary journey.

Yet, when asked about helming such a project during promotions for his upcoming film Nishaanchi, acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap was refreshingly candid.

In a conversation with Filmgyan, Kashyap admitted, “I don't know if I would want to because he's already a hero to many people, to many children. If I have to do a biopic, I would choose a difficult subject, a person's life.”

While he politely declined the idea, his admiration for Kohli was unmistakable. “He is a very beautiful man. I know him personally, and he is a very authentic human being. He is very emotional; he is an incredible person,” Kashyap added.

Kashyap, whose previous works include cult classics like Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), Ugly (2013), and Raman Raghav 2.0 (2016), is now turning his attention to Nishaanchi, an intense drama set in Uttar Pradesh in the early 2000s.

The film marks the acting debut of Aaishvary Thackeray, who takes on a challenging double role as brothers Babloo and Dabloo, characters whose opposing ideologies form the heart of the story.

While Nishaanchi carries echoes of Kashyap’s signature storytelling style, he emphasised that it is not simply a continuation of Gangs of Wasseypur.

“This film is Crime and Punishment. I wouldn't call it an adaptation or interpretation, but influenced by it. I have always believed crime has consequences. I have never tried to glorify crime. My approach has been different in different films, and there is always a consequence. Nobody gets away scot-free in my films,” he explained to Filmgyan.

With this new project, Kashyap hopes to offer audiences a fresh narrative while sidestepping questions about a potential Gangs of Wasseypur 3.

As always, his films promise intensity, authenticity, and morally complex characters, making Nishaanchi one of the most anticipated releases of the year, even without the lure of a cricketing biopic.
