Ace batter Virat Kohli on Wednesday became the highest run-scorer in T20 World Cups when he reached 16 against Bangladesh in Adelaide.

Kohli went past the record of former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene's total of 1,016 runs in T20 World Cups. While the stylish Sri Lankan batter took 31 innings to score that runs, Kohli took only 23 innings.

BCCI congratulated Kohli as soon as he crossed the milestone.

Kohli, 33, has 13 half-centuries to his credit across all editions of the T20 World Cup, including three in the present edition.

The former skipper came in to bat early after India lost opener Rohit Sharma cheaply and stayed till the last ball for an unbeaten 64 off 44 deliveries.

Earlier in the tournament he scored an unbeaten 82 against Pakistan, followed by an innings of 62 against Netherlands.

The ICC rankings before the Adelaide match saw Kohli back in the top 10 after a long while. He was in the 10th position with 638 points. The innings against Bangladesh will push up his rankings further.

Kohli is also the highest run-getter in all T20 internationals ahead of skipper Rohit Sharma (3811), New Zealand's Martin Guptill (3531) and Pakistan skipper Babar Azam (3239)
