Watch rare encounter: Man from uncontacted Amazon tribe meets Brazilian villagers, learns to use lighter

A rare meeting between a riverine community in Brazil’s Amazon and a man from an uncontacted Indigenous tribe has shocked the internet. A video on social media shows the young man looking at a lighter in amazement as the villagers demonstrate how to use it.

Man made voluntary contact

As per the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples (Funai), the man made voluntary contact on Wednesday around 7 pm local time. According to The Associated Press, local villagers said the barefooted man, wearing a loincloth, appeared calm and in good health.


He carried two wooden sticks, which he waved as he interacted with the villagers. However, the locals, who requested anonymity, said Funai had instructed them not to speak about the incident.

Speaking to the Associated Press, villagers believed the man was asking for fire. They showed him a lighter and explained how it works. However, despite their efforts, the man could not understand how to use it.

Funai officials soon arrived, and the man was served fish. After this, he was taken to a nearby facility.

Funai’s statement

As per Funai, "The Madeira Purus Ethnoenvironmental Protection Front (FPE), the General Coordination of Isolated and Recently Contacted Indians (CGIIRC), and the Secretariat of Indigenous Health (SESAI) have already taken steps to activate the contingency plan, at the local and national levels."

The agency further added, "The FPE team is already monitoring the situation on site, providing the necessary care for the isolated Indigenous people, and awaiting the arrival of medical teams and foundation staff who are already traveling to the location, where they will remain for an indefinite period."

Authorities are now closely monitoring the situation to ensure the man’s well-being.
