The tune was composed in 1946 by Major M.T. Proctor in memory of Rifleman Badluram, who was killed while fighting Japanese forces at Kohima in 1944. Set to the melody of “John Brown’s Body,” the song uses dark humour to reflect resilience and survival in difficult circumstances.
According to regimental lore, Badluram’s quartermaster continued drawing his rations after his death, which helped sustain the besieged unit. This anecdote is captured in the line, “Badluram ka badan zameen ke neeche hai, toh humein uska ration milta hai,” loosely meaning that while his body lay underground, his rations continued to support his comrades.
The song is often sung during attestation parades in Shillong and has become a symbol of camaraderie, defiance and shared joy beyond ranks, commonly heard at regimental gatherings and celebrations.
