Vintage Levi’s jeans from 1880s sells for $76,000 at auction

The Levi’s one-pocket buckle back jeans, still in "wearable" condition, was found in in an abandoned gold mine years ago.

A pair of Levi’s jeans from the 19th century has been sold for $76,000 at an auction in New Mexico, reports said Thursday.

The Levi’s one-pocket buckle back jeans, still in "wearable" condition, was found in in an abandoned gold mine years ago in the American west.

It is dated to be from the 1880's, and this was how the date was reportedly arrived at. Its label says, “The only kind made by white labor” . Since that kind of campaign against the Chinese existed between 1882 and 1890, the jeans would have belonged to that period.

“I’m still kind of bewildered, just surprised in myself for even purchasing them,” buyer Kyle Haupert, a 23-year-old vintage clothing dealer from San Diego, told the Wall Street Journal.

Reports said the total price for the denim jeans $87,400, after adding the buyer’s premium.
