Actor Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, have secured a major victory in Tamil Nadu, defeating the long-standing Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government and marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape, which had been dominated by Dravidian politics for over five decades.

Vijay launched his party in 2024 amid speculation about a possible electoral debut in the 2026 Assembly elections. Months later, his film The Greatest Of All Time became a commercial success and drew attention for a scene that sparked political discussion. A clip showing Vijay driving a car with the registration number TN 07 CM 2026 went viral, with supporters interpreting it as a reference to his political ambitions.

Early endorsements and predictions

Actor Premgi Amaren, Vijay’s co-star, had earlier expressed confidence in his political future, stating that Vijay would become Chief Minister in 2026. With the election outcome, Vijay is now set to become the first actor turned politician to assume the Chief Minister’s role in Tamil Nadu.

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has emerged as the single largest party in the 234-member Assembly, winning 108 seats. The party remains short of the majority mark by 10 seats, prompting discussions around potential alliances.

Will TVK go for alliance?

Reports have indicated that support could come from parties currently aligned with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, including the Congress, which secured five seats, and the Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India Marxist, and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, each of which won two seats.

Vijay’s electoral wins

Vijay contested and won from two constituencies, Trichy East and Perambur. Reports suggest that he is likely to retain the Perambur seat and resign from Trichy East.
