Vijay Sethupathi Bigg Boss Tamil controversy explained: What was his leadership remark that upset CM Vijay's TVK supporters?

Actor Vijay Sethupathi's comment on leadership inside the Bigg Boss Tamil house has turned into a full-blown political controversy, after viewers linked his words to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph C Vijay, who heads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

The remark came during a conversation with contestant Shathiga and did not name any leader or party. Even so, TVK supporters treated it as a veiled attack on the chief minister and went after the actor on social media. Bigg Boss Tamil has now issued a clarification asking viewers not to read political meaning into conversations happening inside the show, while Naam Tamilar Katchi chief Seeman has stepped in to defend Sethupathi, asking why only one party is reacting so strongly to a general comment on leadership.

What Vijay Sethupathi said on Bigg Boss Tamil


While speaking to contestant Shathiga about leadership qualities, Sethupathi said, "Making reckless promises and then, when problems and responsibilities arise, blaming the opposition and running away is not leadership. It is deception."

He did not mention Vijay, TVK or any political party while making the point.

How the remark got linked to the Chief Minister

Despite Sethupathi not naming anyone, several viewers connected his words to Chief Minister Vijay. TVK supporters took to social media to criticise the actor, accusing him of using a television show to make political commentary. Some also threatened to stop his films from being screened, which added to the row online.

Bigg Boss Tamil's clarification

With the issue snowballing, the makers of Bigg Boss Tamil released an official statement asking viewers not to draw conclusions beyond the show's setting.

"Bigg Boss Tamil Season 10 is an entertainment programme presented within the framework of its established format, themes and game environment. The situations, conversations, expressions and interactions featured in the programme form part of its evolving narrative and are to be understood in the context in which they occur within the show," the statement said.

It further added, "No reference or expression in the programme should be construed as representing, endorsing or commenting upon any person, organization, institution, ideology or circumstance outside the context of the programme. Any interpretation or association beyond the programme and its intended entertainment context is neither intended nor endorsed."

Seeman comes out in support of Sethupathi

Naam Tamilar Katchi chief Seeman released a statement backing the actor and criticising TVK for the backlash. He said Sethupathi did not name any individual or party, and had only spoken about leadership and responsibility in the context of a game situation inside the house.

Seeman asked why a general remark on leadership had triggered such anger from TVK members, from ministers to ordinary workers, when no other party had reacted the same way. He questioned how the party planned to handle direct criticism in a democracy if a comment like this upset them so much, and asked whether this was the "alternative politics" TVK claimed to represent.

He also said that wanting others to only express opinions one agrees with is not democracy, and that true democracy means allowing opposing views and responding to them with counter arguments, not intimidation. He added that simply making a film about being a democrat is not enough, and that genuine democratic values need to be upheld in practice.
