Vijay Diwas: What happened in 1971
The India–Pakistan war began on December 3, 1971, and ended just 13 days later. The trigger was the humanitarian crisis in East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, where civilians faced widespread violence during a military crackdown by the Pakistani army. Millions were affected, and a large number were forced to flee their homes.India intervened to support the people of East Pakistan in their struggle for independence. What began as a regional crisis soon turned into a full-scale war between the two countries.
Pakistan Army's Surrender that Changed History
On December 16, 1971, Pakistani General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi surrendered to the Indian Army and Bangladesh’s Mukti Bahini in Dhaka. Around 93,000 Pakistani soldiers laid down their arms, making it one of the largest military surrenders since World War II.The outcome led to the birth of Bangladesh and strengthened India’s standing in the region. The victory, however, came at a heavy cost, with around 3,900 Indian soldiers losing their lives and many more suffering injuries.
