Russia unleashed a volley of missile strikes against Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities Monday, hitting many civilian targets.

The missiles rained for many hours and hit residential areas and critical infrastructure facilities, signalling a major escalation in the war.

It came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin called a Saturday explosion on the huge bridge connecting Russia to its annexed territory of Crimea a “terrorist act” masterminded by Ukrainian special services.

At least eight people were killed and 24 were injured in just one of the Kyiv strikes, Ukrainian officials said.

11 infrastructure facilities in eight regions and in the capital of Kyiv were damaged in Russian strikes.

Journalists in Ukraine called it the 'Missile Morning' and many of the videos tweeted out from the cities showed the devastation.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the rush hour attacks appeared to have been deliberately timed to kill people.

Another video captured the destruction in Shevchenko Park in central Kyiv, which is the city’s busiest park.

Explosions were also reported in Lviv, Ternopil and Zhytomyr in Ukraine's west, Dnipro and Kremenchuk in central Ukraine, Zaporizhzhia in the south and Kharkiv in the east.

Ukraine's defence ministry said Russia had fired 75 cruise missiles, and Ukraine's air defences had shot down 41 of them.

"They are trying to destroy us and wipe us off the face of the earth," Zelenskiy said on the Telegram messaging app. "The air raid sirens do not subside throughout Ukraine. There are missiles hitting. Unfortunately, there are dead and wounded."

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow had launched long-range missile attacks against Ukraine's energy, military and communications infrastructure in retaliation for an attack on the bridge to Crimea.
