Ayyappa devotees permitted to carry ‘irumudi’ along with them in flights: Ram Mohan Naidu
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has announced that devotees undertaking the sacred pilgrimage to Sabarimala will be permitted to carry the ‘irumudi’ as cabin luggage on flights, rather than as check-in baggage. The decision is in effect from Friday until 20 January, offering convenience to travellers observing this revered tradition.

Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu shared the news in a video post on X, highlighting that the concession is designed to respect the deep sentiments associated with the ritual while ensuring adherence to all security protocols.

What is the Sabarimala Pilgrimage?

Sabarimala, located in the Western Ghats of Kerala, is one of India’s most famous and sacred pilgrimage sites. Every year, millions of devotees visit the hill temple dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, particularly during the Mandala-Makaravilakku season from mid-November to mid-January.

The pilgrimage involves a strict period of spiritual discipline, fasting, and abstinence. Devotees carry a ‘irumudi’, a traditional cloth bundle containing offerings such as coconut, ghee, and camphor, which is considered highly sacred. The journey to Sabarimala is not just physical; it is regarded as a test of devotion, endurance, and spiritual discipline.

Who is Lord Ayyappa?

Lord Ayyappa, also known as Dharmasastha, is a highly revered Hindu deity, worshipped predominantly in South India. He is believed to be the son of Lord Shiva and Mohini, the female incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Ayyappa embodies celibacy, self-discipline, and dharma (righteousness). Devotees observe strict spiritual practices during the pilgrimage, including abstaining from alcohol, non-vegetarian food, and other physical indulgences, to honour the deity.

Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu emphasised that this move is intended to uphold cultural values and religious traditions while facilitating convenience for devotees. “Understanding the deep sentiments attached to the sacred irumudi, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has decided to permit devotees to carry it with them on flights, ensuring their traditional practices remain uninterrupted,” he said.

He added that all necessary security measures will continue to be followed, but the government is committed to respecting the devotional practices of pilgrims. “The government remains dedicated to honouring the beliefs of every community and ensuring ease, respect, and dignity for all devotees,” Naidu noted.
