What Is Vat Purnima Vrat All About?

Also known as Vat Savitri Vrat in some places, this fast is based on the story of Savitri and Satyawan. According to the legend, Savitri's devotion and intelligence were so strong that she convinced Lord Yama, the god of death, to bring her husband back to life. The vrat is named after the Vat Vriksha or banyan tree, which symbolises long life and loyalty.

On this day, women worship the banyan tree, praying for a happy and lasting marriage.

Puja Vidhi: How Is Vat Purnima Observed?

  • Women wake up early, take a bath, and wear traditional clothes, usually red or yellow.
  • They keep a strict nirjala fast, which means no food or water all day.
  • The Vat Vriksha (banyan tree) is decorated and worshipped with flowers, turmeric, vermilion (kumkum), and sacred threads.
  • Women go around the tree (parikrama) while tying threads and reciting the Savitri Vrat Katha.
  • Devotional songs and mantras are sung, often in groups.
  • The fast is broken in the evening only after all the rituals are complete.

Why Vat Purnima Matters

Women observe this vrat not only for their husband’s long life but also as a way to build inner strength and patience. It brings couples closer and keeps alive the values of loyalty, faith, and love in married life.
