Varalakshmi Vratam 2026 date, shubh muhurat , puja time

Every year around this time, homes across South India start filling up with the scent of turmeric, fresh mango leaves and jasmine as families prepare for Varalakshmi Vratam. But this year, there's an extra step before the rituals even begin, figuring out which Friday to actually observe.

Some Panchangs point to August 21. Others insist it's August 28. And unlike most festival date debates, which usually clear up once one authoritative source is checked, this one has genuinely split opinion among priests, temples and family elders alike.

Varalakshmi Vratam 2026 Date: So Which Friday Is It?

Varalakshmi Vratam is meant to fall on a Friday in the Shravana month, typically the Friday just before Shravana Purnima. The trouble starts with how different calendar traditions calculate the exact tithi that governs this rule. Because the lunar calendar doesn't divide neatly into 24-hour blocks, tithis can start midway through one day and spill into the next, two equally valid readings of the same astronomical data have landed on two different Fridays this year. One tradition backs August 21. Another backs August 28.

There isn't a single "correct" answer here that overrides the rest. Priests and Panchang-makers in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where this festival carries particular weight, aren't unanimous either. The most practical advice going around: stick with whatever Panchang your family, your temple or your local priest has always followed. Switching traditions just because of a viral date isn't necessary.

Varalakshmi Vratam 2026: Hyderabad Timings

For those observing on August 21, one widely used Hyderabad Panchang lists Navami tithi running until 11:36 PM, with Anuradha nakshatra in effect until late morning (11:52 AM). Rahu Kalam falls between 10:45 AM and 12:19 PM, so most households avoid starting the puja in that window. Abhijit Muhurat, generally considered auspicious, sits between 11:54 AM and 12:44 PM.

Lagna timings differ slightly depending on which calculation you follow. One version gives Simha Lagna from roughly 6:00 AM to 7:55 AM, Vrischika Lagna from 12:10 PM to 2:23 PM, and Kumbha Lagna in the evening from 6:20 PM to 7:58 PM. A separate calculation simply recommends Kumbha Lagna during Pradosh time, that same 6:20 PM to 7:58 PM slot, as the window to aim for.

For families going with the August 28 date, also a Friday, Rahu Kalam shifts slightly earlier, to 10:44 AM–12:18 PM, and Abhijit Muhurat runs from 11:54 AM to 12:42 PM. Sunrise that day is expected around 6:02 AM, with sunset at 6:33 PM.

Note: These timings are calculated for Hyderabad specifically. Anyone in a different city should check local sunrise, sunset and Rahu Kalam figures rather than borrowing these directly.

Varalakshmi Vrat 2026 Puja Vidhi

The day usually begins early, with a bath before anything else is touched. The house gets cleaned, the puja corner decorated, and a rangoli often goes up near the spot where the ritual will happen. A wooden platform or chowki is set up to hold either a kalash or an idol of the goddess.

The kalash itself takes some care to prepare. It's filled with water or rice, dressed up with mango leaves around its neck and a coconut placed on top, and, depending on the family, decorated further with flowers, jewellery and cloth to represent Goddess Varalakshmi. There's genuinely no fixed template for this part. Some households go elaborate with silk drapes and gold ornaments; others keep it minimal with just turmeric, kumkum and a few coins tucked around the vessel.

Once the sankalp is done and the goddess invoked, offerings follow, turmeric, kumkum, flowers, fruit, betel leaves, nuts, and naivedyam. Mantras and stotras are recited according to whatever the family has always used, and the puja closes with aarti before prasadam is distributed to everyone present.

Varalakshmi Vratam Significance

Varalakshmi is worshipped as one form of Goddess Lakshmi, and the vrat itself centres on prayers for prosperity, wellbeing and a happy household. Married women traditionally lead the observance, though it's often very much a family affair, with everyone pitching in somewhere along the way.

The festival also connects to the broader idea of Ashtalakshmi, the eight forms in which Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped, each tied to a different kind of abundance, from wealth and grain to courage and knowledge. During Varalakshmi Puja, many of these forms get invoked through prayer, though exactly how varies from one region to the next.
