Veteran playback singer Vani Jairam died on Saturday at her home in Chennai. She was 77-year-old. Jaya Bachchan is heartbroken over the death of Vani Jairam. Jaya said that it is sad and depressing when such talent fades. Vani Jairam sang nearly 10,000 songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and other languages during her 50-year career.

In Hindi, she sang 300 songs. Jairam began her singing career in Bollywood, where she was known for her vocal range and ability to adapt to any difficult composition.

Vani Jairam’s first break came in the Hindi film 'Guddi' (1971), directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. The song 'Bole Re Papihara,' which starred Jaya Bachchan, catapulted the singer to fame. Humko Mann Ki Shakti Dena in Guddi (1971) also became very popular.

Unfortunately, the songs that followed did not achieve the same level of success, and Vani had to settle for the occasional Hindi hit, such as Pyar Kabhi Kam Na Karna Sanam in Ek Mutthi Aasman, a duet with Mukesh composed by Madan Mohan, and Teri Jheel Si Gehri Aankhon Mein in Dhuen Ki Lakeer, another duet with Nitin Mukesh.

The majority of Vani's songs after Guddi were for pauranic mythological films that came and went without making any waves.

After Guddi, her one big break came with Gulzar's Meera, after Lata Mangeshkar opted out of the project. Pandit Ravi Shankar, the composer, decided to recreate the Meera Bhajans, which Lataji had sung flawlessly for her brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar. Meera Bhajans by Vani Jairam in Meera did not have the same impact.

The same could be said of the film Bansi Birju. Vani was Jaya's female vocalist at the time, following Guddi. Despite being beautifully composed by Vijay Raghav Rao, Vani's songs in Bansi Birju, Hai Re Saajan Mosey Kahe Kare Barjori, and Aaya Hai Koi Khayaal failed to make an impression.

After Guddi and Bansi Birju, Jaya immediately switched to Lata Mangeshkar's voice in Ek Nazar. The same situation arose in Shailendra Singh's career when, following the success of Bobby, Rishi Kapoor chose Kishore Kumar's voice in Zehreela.
