Heavy downpours have led to overflowing rivers, landslides and flood warnings, prompting the state government and district administrations to order school closures across multiple regions. The safety of children and staff has been cited as the primary concern behind the directives.
On September 1, authorities in Almora ordered schools from Class 1 to 12, along with Anganwadi centres, to remain closed after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted very heavy rainfall.
Similar instructions were extended to Dehradun, Chamoli, Champawat, Uttarkashi, Pithoragarh, Haridwar, Pauri, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar and Tehri districts, all of which have been hit by incessant showers.
In addition to these emergency closures, September 5 will also be a holiday for Eid al-Milad.
However, more rain-related shutdowns are likely through the month, depending on the intensity of the weather. The Char Dham Yatra has already been suspended until September 5 as a precautionary measure.
