Ustad Zakir Hussain is keen to perform in India, after a hiatus for almost three years. Following previous ensemble performances in Delhi and Pune, the musician is looking forward to his first solo performance on December 11 in Thane, Maharashtra.

"After not performing in India for three years, it is right that I begin again with a solo in Thane, the place where I played my first-ever solo performance as a youngster. I've missed locking eyes with Indian fans and hearing their encouraging words, 'Waah, kya baat hai.' I can't wait to hear these words again," Hussain says.

When asked about the current Indian classical music consumers, Ustad Zakir Hussain said, "The introduction of digital music platforms has created more opportunities for music to reach fans that like such music across geographies." Even in India, there is a growing appreciation for classical music among young Indians, but we still have a long way to go."


The maestro believes that the tabla has changed through time, as an instrument. This perhaps explains its global popularity. Tabla is a relatively new Indian classical instrument.

“The Tabla is not more than 250 years old. This has proven to be advantageous for the instrument since the approach used on the tabla allows it to replicate any and all rhythm patterns in the globe. That's why the tabla has found fans all over the world, and Tabla players like me have been able to imprint rhythms from many countries and genres onto the tabla, making it relevant for these times and hopefully the future” says the veteran, who considers jazz to be the most relatable form of music among western genres.

"In India, jazz has found favour among the younger generation. I've always loved jazz and have worked with many great musicians. Ustad Zakir Hussain adds, "The tabla beats always make a wonderful harmony with jazz."
