US woman gets emotional as Indian family leaves country to move back to homeland; netizens say this is what we should leave behind

A video of an American woman breaking down in tears while bidding farewell to her Indian neighbours, who were leaving the US to return to India, has gone viral on Instagram, moving thousands of viewers online. The heartwarming moment comes against the backdrop of a rise in attacks on Indians in the US.

The clip was posted by Vijay Kokkeragadda, who said it was filmed on the day he and his wife were setting off for Detroit Airport. In the video, the couple is seen standing outside their home when their neighbour approaches to say goodbye and immediately pulls them into a tight hug. The embrace soon gives way to tears, with the neighbour crying as she continues to hold onto the couple. They respond by smiling, hugging her back and trying to console her, in what comes across as a quiet, wordless farewell rather than any dramatic exchange.

Couple unaware they were being filmed

Per Vijay's post, the moment was not staged for the camera. A friend filmed the exchange without informing the couple and shared the footage with them afterwards. Vijay said he was thankful the moment had been captured, describing it as a genuine display of emotion and affection between neighbours, and added that he hoped to meet her again in the future.

Because none of those involved appeared to be performing for the camera, the footage comes across as unusually personal, capturing simply a neighbour saying farewell to people she had grown close to.

Attacks on Indians in US hit record high in 2025

Fourteen Indians were attacked in the United States in 2025, the highest count recorded for any country, according to data from the Ministry of External Affairs released on Thursday in response to a question in the Lok Sabha. The number marks a 27% rise over 2024, when 11 such attacks against Indians were recorded.

In an earlier reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh had said that the number of reported incidents involving Indians in the US in 2025 had already surpassed the total for any of the previous four years.

For this American woman and her Indian neighbours, that goodbye came down to one hug that said more than words could.
