More than a century ago, Newfoundland introduced just four moose into its forests to create hunting opportunities and provide a dependable source of meat. What began as a small wildlife experiment eventually transformed the island's ecosystem, with the animals multiplying into one of the largest moose populations in North America.

Today, wildlife experts estimate Newfoundland is home to around 110,000 moose. While the species has become an important part of the province's culture and economy, its dramatic population growth also highlights the long-term ecological consequences of introducing animals into habitats where they did not naturally exist.

Why were moose introduced to Newfoundland?

Moose are native to mainland Canada and Labrador but did not naturally inhabit the island of Newfoundland.


According to Newfoundland and Labrador's 2022–2026 Moose Management Plan, the first moose were brought to the island in 1878, with four more released in 1904. The aim was to establish a sustainable hunting population that could provide both recreation and a reliable food source for residents.

At the time, few could have predicted how quickly the animals would multiply.

There were no other large herbivores competing for the same vegetation, while wolves, their principal natural predator, had almost disappeared. The Newfoundland wolf eventually became extinct around 1930, removing one of the few natural checks on the growing population.

The island's extensive forests also provided abundant food, particularly young trees and shrubs created after natural disturbances.

These favourable conditions allowed the population to expand at an extraordinary pace. By the late 1950s, wildlife experts estimated that Newfoundland supported between 150,000 and 200,000 moose, giving it one of the highest moose densities anywhere in the world.

How did moose change Newfoundland's forests?

As the population increased, the animals began altering the island's forests.

An adult moose consumes approximately 20 to 30 kilograms of vegetation each day, feeding mainly on young trees, shrubs and fresh shoots. Across the island, this amounted to roughly one million tonnes of vegetation every year.

Because these plants are essential for forest regeneration, heavy browsing prevented many young trees from maturing. Over time, forests struggled to replace the vegetation being eaten, fundamentally changing the structure and composition of large areas of woodland.

Scientists describe this as exceeding the habitat's carrying capacity, the maximum number of animals an environment can support without suffering long-term ecological damage.

Why did the moose population decline?

By the late 1950s and early 1960s, the consequences of overpopulation had become increasingly apparent.

Large areas of forest showed signs of over-browsing, where vegetation had been consumed faster than it could recover. In some regions, localised overhunting added further pressure.

According to the management plan, Newfoundland's moose population may have fallen to fewer than 50,000 animals by the early 1970s.

The decline prompted authorities to introduce an area-based hunting quota system in 1973, allowing wildlife managers to regulate hunting according to local population levels. The system remains in place today.

Why did history repeat itself in the 1990s?

Following the introduction of hunting quotas, forest habitats gradually recovered and moose numbers began increasing once again.

Commercial forestry also produced large areas of young forest, creating fresh feeding grounds that encouraged further population growth.

By the 1990s, the number of moose had once again exceeded 150,000.

However, scientists found that the island's forests were once again struggling to support such high numbers.

Unlike the sharp population crash of the 1960s, wildlife managers responded by increasing hunting quotas before the ecological damage became too severe.

Between the mid-1990s and 2012, the population declined by around 25 per cent. Importantly, similar declines were recorded even in areas where hunting was prohibited, suggesting that habitat limitations, not hunting alone, were driving the reduction.

How are Newfoundland's moose managed today?

The latest management plan estimates Newfoundland's moose population at approximately 110,000 animals.

Rather than attempting to restore record population levels, wildlife managers now focus on maintaining a balance between moose numbers, healthy forests and public safety.

Scientists monitor the population using aerial surveys, hunter reports, jawbone collection programmes and other biological data to estimate breeding success, habitat quality and overall population trends.

This information helps determine annual hunting quotas across different management areas.

Why are population targets different across the island?

Wildlife managers recognise that not every part of Newfoundland can support the same number of moose.

Areas close to towns, cities and major highways are managed with lower population targets to reduce the risk of vehicle collisions, while more remote regions are managed according to local habitat conditions and available food resources.

This region-specific approach aims to protect both people and wildlife while preventing another period of widespread habitat degradation.

What does Newfoundland's moose story teach us?

Newfoundland's experience has become one of the world's best-known examples of how introducing a species into a new environment can produce unintended long-term consequences.

Although the moose have become deeply embedded in the province's identity, their remarkable rise, and subsequent decline, illustrates the importance of balancing wildlife populations with the ecosystems that sustain them.

More than 120 years after just four moose were released onto the island, their descendants continue to shape Newfoundland's forests, offering an enduring lesson in wildlife management and ecological balance.
