How does pneumonia turn to sepsis?
Pneumonia, a respiratory infection, fills the lungs with fluid, making breathing difficult. When it takes hold in both lungs, it is difficult to get oxygen where it needs to go. According to the Mayo Clinic, the condition can quickly become life-threatening, potentially leading to respiratory failure, sepsis, and even organ failure if not treated in time. Doctors warn that the window for effective treatment can close much faster than many people realise.ALSO READ: Who is Meenakshi Madan Rai?
What is sepsis?
According to the Mayo Clinic, sepsis is a dangerous condition in which the body responds improperly to an infection. Instead of only fighting the infection, the body’s immune response begins damaging its own tissues and organs.Sepsis can become life-threatening if it worsens into septic shock, a severe condition that can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure and damage major organs such as the lungs, kidneys, and heart. Any type of infection — including bacterial, viral, or fungal infections — can potentially lead to sepsis. Common warning signs of sepsis can include confusion, rapid breathing, extreme weakness, low blood pressure, fast heart rate and bluish or mottled skin, per the CDC.
The Mayo Clinic says early treatment is critical because it significantly improves the chances of survival. Symptoms can vary from person to person, but warning signs of septic shock may include difficulty standing, trouble staying awake, confusion, and major changes in mental state.
Kyle Busch cause of death
Busch died suddenly aged 41 on Thursday after what his family had described as a "severe illness". "The medical evaluation provided to the Busch Family concluded that severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications," the Busch family statement read. "The Family asks for continued understanding and privacy during this difficult time."How pneumonia becomes deadly
Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs. The air sacs may fill with fluid or pus (purulent material), causing cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing. A variety of organisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi, can cause pneumonia, says Mayo Clinic.Double pneumonia means both lungs are infected at once, according to the Cleveland Clinic and is worse than single-lung infection. "When we look at people in the 40's who are sick enough to get admitted to the hospital, about 1% of them will die of pneumonia," Ryan Maves, MD, FCCP, Chair of the CHEST organization's infections network and a Professor at Wake Forest, told USA TODAY Sports.
"After certain pneumonias, classically influenza, but some other viruses can do this as well, people start with a viral pneumonia, and then you get a bacterial super infection on top of that," Maves said. "The bacterial super infections are often potentially very dangerous organisms - staphylococcal pneumonia, some bad streptococcal pneumonias -- and these can be very severe and can progress very quickly," he added.
According to the Mayo Clinic, most people who develop serious complications from pneumonia are older than 65 or already dealing with health conditions that weaken the body’s ability to fight infections. Pneumonia often begins with symptoms that look similar to the flu, including fever, chills, cough, chest pain, and shortness of breath.
How Kyle Busch health worsened
According to reports, Kyle Busch had sinus infection that worsened prior to his death. "This upper respiratory sinus infection progressed to pneumonia," Fox News senior medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel told Fox News Digital. Bacterial pneumonia is normally more severe than viral pneumonia, according to Siegel.“The body reacts to a severe lung infection by releasing inflammatory chemicals. It’s the immune system revving up,” said Marc Siegel. “But as with many things in the body, the immune system can sometimes cause more harm than help.”
As sepsis becomes more severe, it can lower blood pressure and disrupt the flow of oxygen to the body’s tissues. This may lead to lactic acidosis, a dangerous condition caused by a buildup of lactic acid in the bloodstream.
