A Reddit post comparing American and Indian startup founders has sparked online debate. A software engineer described the differences between the founders of the two countries based on their work histories. The engineer, however, clarified that the post was based solely on personal experience and not intended as a generalization.

Clear vision vs chaos, says software engineer

The engineer, who worked both freelance and full-time, shared that American startup founders typically demonstrate clearer goals, foster healthier work environments, and value team independence. “Knows the product and the customer,” the post read. “Trusts his team, doesn’t try to master every craft… Builds for users, not user… Values quality over quantity.”

The post appreciated American founders for trusting their team’s expertise and focusing on user needs rather than pleasing a single stakeholder.

Indian startup culture draws criticism

In contrast, the engineer described Indian founders as having vague product visions and promoting an unsustainable work culture. “Often unclear on what the product even is… Builds to please a single user, not users… Pushes for 16-hour days and weekends, no regard for sustainability.” The post also pointed out issues with planning and management style. “Constant context-switching, no real direction… Thinks he owns you because you’re on his payroll.”

Online reactions reflect frustration and agreement

The post went viral, sparking reactions from several users who shared similar views or workplace grievances. One user commented, “The only good thing an Indian founder can teach you is how not to run a startup.” Another added, “Indian founders are worst, would always always work outside Indian based company.”

Some users highlighted gender-related concerns in Indian startups. “For girls its a nightmare working with pervert uncles,, they’ll never miss a chance,” one comment read.

Another user said, “I’ve worked in US and Europe I highly agree with your take!!! Also, the Indian employees that were outsourced were a pain in the ass to work with they would ping contently, want immediate answers, avoid officially writing emails for requests, and were messaging on teams outside of office hours!!!!”
