New York, Nov 3 (IANS) People waiting for the US Presidential election results on Tuesday night may not know the outcome unless Vice President and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris or Republican candidate Donald Trump scores a significant victory in most states, especially the so-called swing states.
The US Presidential election is set to take place on November 5, 2024, with early voting already underway. The race between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump is expected to be extremely close, and the final results may not be known for days after the polls close. As ballots are counted, initial leads may shift, similar to the “red mirage” and “blue shift” seen in the 2020 election, where Trump led on election night before Biden overtook him.

US Election Results: Key Dates and Polling Information

The official voting day is Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Polling hours vary by state, typically from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM local time. In India, polling will start at approximately 4:30 PM IST on November 5 and continue until 6:30 AM IST on November 6.

2024 Presidential Election Exit Polls

Exit polls, which help gauge voter opinions and predict election outcomes, will begin at 5 PM EST, translating to 2:30 AM IST on November 6.

US Presidential Election: Announcement of Results

News outlets can report state-specific voting data, but official winner announcements will only be made once all votes are counted. In swing states, the final tally may take longer, especially in tightly contested races. A winner could be announced within hours if there is a decisive lead, but closely contested elections may take days or weeks to finalize, depending on vote counting speed and potential legal challenges.

The final results of the 2024 US election will likely not be available on election night. High voter turnout and increased mail-in ballots are expected to extend the counting process in many states.

Some states plan to report most results by the day after the election. However, others anticipate delays due to factors like processing mail ballots, verifying provisional votes, and counting late-arriving ballots. Each state has its own rules and deadlines for these procedures.

These differences in early reporting could create temporary shifts in vote totals, especially in states with close races. Early results may be skewed by the type of ballots counted first. For example, mail-in ballots, which tend to favor Democratic candidates, might be tallied before same-day in-person votes, which could show an early lead for Republican candidates.

Adding to the complexity, some states require provisional ballots for voters who switch from mail-in to in-person voting. Election observers are urging patience as officials work to ensure an accurate and complete count.
