UP official declares 70-year-old man 'dead' in govt records, gets suspended

Om Prakash, a resident of Fatehpur village, was not able to get pension or withdraw money from the bank, because he was declared dead in government records a year ago.

A village development officer has been suspended in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur for declaring a 70-year-old man "dead" in government records, reports said Tuesday.

Om Prakash, a resident of Fatehpur village, was not able to get pension or withdraw money from the bank, because he was declared dead in government records a year ago.

"As I am dead in government records, I could not even withdraw money from the bank. My cane crop is affected as I could not irrigate it due to lack of money. Now, nobody is helping me," PTI quoted Prakash as telling senior officials

He found out that he was "dead" in official records when he went to collect pension meant for the elderly

Village development officer Sumit Kumar was suspended after a report by the tehsildar found "gross laxity" on his part.
