Kushinagar Mela Accident
At least 30 people, including women and children, were injured after a 60-foot-high swing ride collapsed during operation at the Bhainsaha (Chait Barni) Mela in the Khadda area of Kushinagar on Wednesday night.

The incident occurred amid heavy crowds at the annual fair, triggering panic and chaos at the site.

Overcrowded Ride Suspected Behind Kushinagar Mela Accident

Eyewitnesses reported that the swing was carrying nearly 80 people, far beyond its capacity, when the accident took place. The ride had reportedly completed two rotations before unusual creaking sounds were heard, suggesting a possible structural fault.

Despite passengers raising concerns, the operator allegedly continued the ride.

Massive Structure Collapses, Riders Thrown Off

Moments later, the swing structure reportedly uprooted from its base and came crashing down, throwing several riders to the ground while others were trapped beneath the wreckage.

The impact caused widespread panic among visitors at the mela.

Rescue Operations Launched Amid Difficult Conditions

Police personnel deployed at the fair, along with local residents, rushed to the spot and began rescue operations. The heavy metal structure made it challenging to reach those trapped, with the operation taking nearly an hour.

Six ambulances were pressed into service to transport the injured to nearby hospitals, while over 10 critically injured individuals were referred to a district medical college.

Two children are said to be in serious condition.

Officials noted that this year’s turnout was significantly higher than expected.

Preliminary Probe Points to Poor Anchoring and Safety Lapses

Initial investigations suggest that the base of the swing was weak and not properly anchored, making it unable to withstand the excessive load.

Authorities are likely to examine safety protocols and operational lapses as part of the ongoing inquiry into the incident.
