Several countries around the world were still to recover from the shock of the Second World War, with national economies in ruins. However, a significant event happened on December 11, 1946, the United Nations General Assembly took the decision to look after and protect children's lives across the world and formed an emergency fund. Subsequently, in 1953 the fund, under the management of the UN, became a separate organisation, and UNICEF was born.
December 11 became the UNICEF day when thousands of UNICEF associates across the world renewed their pledges to work to uplift the condition of children of the World, particularly those from the underprivileged sections.
