Unemployed BTech graduate misses job assessment email arranged through family referral, says parents nowbearing relative's anger

A recent BTech graduate has described facing criticism from relatives after missing an online job assessment invitation for a software engineer position at a technology company, despite receiving a referral from a family member. In a Reddit post, the graduate said he had been searching for employment since April and regretted missing the opportunity, while also revealing that the incident had led to his parents and other family members being blamed.

The graduate, who completed his engineering degree earlier this year, said he had applied to numerous companies and appeared for tests and interviews without securing a job. The referral had raised hopes of a potential breakthrough, making the missed assessment particularly upsetting for him.

Graduate admits missing assessment deadline

According to his Reddit post, the company had sent him an assessment invitation that required candidates to begin the test within a specified time window. However, he left home to collect some belongings and forgot to check his email again. By the time he realised what had happened, the assessment link had expired.

“I know I messed up. I'm not trying to pretend otherwise,” he wrote, acknowledging his mistake.

The graduate said he immediately emailed the company to request another opportunity to take the assessment. He also tried contacting the relative who had referred him for the position.

He said missing the test was especially difficult to accept because the opportunity had come through his family. “I keep thinking that I wasted an opportunity that my father and relatives worked hard to get for me,” he wrote.

Family members reportedly turn against graduate

The graduate said the consequences extended beyond his missed assessment, with the relative who had helped him secure the referral becoming extremely angry. According to his account, the criticism also spread to his parents and other family members.

“My parents are being blamed for my carelessness, and everyone is upset and embarrassed,” he wrote.

In a subsequent response, he said the situation had become increasingly difficult to deal with, adding that his parents and relatives were angry with him.

“My parents and all my relatives are angry at me right now,” he wrote. “So everyone is being mean at me. Trying my best to distract myself.”

The graduate's account highlighted the emotional pressure he said he was experiencing while looking for work and dealing with his family's reaction to the missed opportunity.

Users share support and similar experiences

The post prompted responses from users who argued that missing an assessment email did not necessarily mean a candidate's job prospects were over.

“Honestly, this is not a big deal,” one commenter wrote, adding that people sometimes miss assessment emails from major technology companies such as Google and Microsoft.

Another user shared a similar experience, saying they had missed an online assessment invitation from Amazon but later managed to get it rescheduled.

Some commenters also questioned the relative's reaction. One user accused the relative of acting as though they were doing an extraordinary favour, while another described the response as excessive and advised the graduate not to dwell on the incident.

Others focused on the graduate's willingness to acknowledge his mistake. One commenter praised him for taking responsibility instead of shifting the blame to someone else.

“You're actually taking accountability,” the user wrote. “That's genuinely a rare quality.”

The discussion reflected differing perspectives on missed recruitment deadlines, family expectations and the pressure faced by young graduates seeking their first jobs. The account and the responses were shared on Reddit and have not been independently verified.
