Ubisoft cancels six games including ‘Prince of Persia’ remake
Ubisoft on Wednesday finally unveiled details of a long-awaited restructuring plan aimed at strengthening its position in an increasingly competitive gaming market, though the strategy comes at the cost of multiple game cancellations and a fresh round of cost-cutting.

A wave of disappointed social media posts from fans mourned the highest-profile axed title, a remake of the beloved 2000s-era classic "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time", which was cut after teams sunk several years into its development.

A further five games have been cancelled outright, including four unannounced titles and one mobile game, while seven more have been delayed.

The cuts and delays make up a large chunk of an expected one-billion-euro ($1.2 billion) operating loss in Ubisoft's 2025-26 financial year.

Why did Ubisoft cancel its games?

The measures are part of a broader plan to streamline operations, including closing studios in Stockholm and Halifax, Canada. Ubisoft said it will have cut at least €100 million in fixed costs compared to the latest financial year by March, a year ahead of target, and has set a goal to slash an additional €200 million over the next two years.

Like many video game makers, Ubisoft was squeezed by a post-pandemic production crunch that delayed major releases. In recent years, it has struggled to stay competitive, with high-profile titles such as Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws failing to gain traction in an increasingly crowded market.

“The portfolio refocus will have a significant impact on the group’s short term financial trajectory, particularly in fiscal years 2026 and 2027, but this reset will strengthen the group and enable it to renew with sustainable growth and robust cash generation,” Chief Executive Officer Yves Guillemot said in the statement.

Ubisoft’s new structure will comprise five “creative houses,” business units each handling a game genre with “faster, decentralized decision-making,” the company said. Starting April, the units will be supported by a network of studios providing development resources, and will shared core services.
