According to Invest Nova Scotia, the bottles were first mulched and melted into small beads. The material was then put through an extrusion process to produce PET foam with the required density.
Ontario-based Armacell worked with JD Composites to process the recycled bottles into PET foam, which was incorporated into the panels used to construct the home.
This allowed the builders to turn plastic waste into a functional construction component while keeping the appearance of the finished house similar to a conventional modern home.
