In a dramatic weekend operation, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured by American forces and flown to the US. While the high-risk raid triggered global political reactions, it was an unexpected detail that dominated online conversations: the clothes Maduro was wearing. Within hours of the capture, US President Donald Trump shared an image of Maduro handcuffed and blindfolded. The photograph showed the Venezuelan leader dressed in a grey Nike Tech tracksuit. Social media users quickly claimed the outfit had sold out, turning a serious geopolitical moment into an unlikely fashion talking point.

Maduro's viral image takes over social media

The image spread rapidly across platforms, drawing mixed reactions. Some users joked that the look could pass as a Halloween costume, while others pointed to a sudden spike in Google searches for the Nike Tech Fleece.

Maduro was also seen wearing a 6 USD Wanme sleep mask and an 11 USD Flintronic anti-noise ear protector. According to online chatter, even these small details caught attention as users zoomed in on every element of the photo.


The Venezuelan leader reportedly wears a 3XL size. Despite claims of a sell-out, the jacket and pants are still listed on Nike’s website at $140 (Nearly Rs 13,000) and $120 respectively.

Nike Tech Fleece tracksuits are still on sale through Nike’s official global website and at select retail outlets such as Foot Locker.

In the Indian market, a comparable Nike Tech Full-Zip Windrunner Hoodie, matching the shade seen in Nicolás Maduro’s photograph, is priced at about ₹6,995, according to information available on the brand’s website.

“This product is made from at least 50% sustainable materials, using a blend of both recycled polyester and organic cotton fibres. The blend is at least 10% recycled fibres or at least 10% organic cotton fibres,” the description reads.

“Channelling the energy of Nike's Windrunner jacket, this hoodie has the iconic chevron design on the chest, updated with super-warm, smooth-on-both-sides Tech fleece construction,” it added.

Maduro opposed US but wore an American company outfit

The moment carried irony. Maduro built his political image on resistance to American influence, yet the defining image of his capture showed him wearing a globally popular US brand. For critics, the symbolism was hard to miss. For others, it was simply strange enough to go viral.
