The next-generation Toyota Fortuner was spotted testing under heavy camouflage ahead of its expected global debut.

Toyota is preparing to unveil the next-generation Fortuner globally on December 1, 2026, with the updated SUV expected to arrive in India in 2027. The upcoming model is likely to bring significant styling and interior changes while retaining its existing ladder-frame architecture and familiar diesel powertrain, according to a report by Car Mag, which cited confirmation from Toyota South Africa.

The Indian launch timeline has not been officially confirmed. The new Fortuner is expected to receive a comprehensive update as Toyota looks to refresh its popular body-on-frame SUV for the next phase of its product cycle.

Toyota Fortuner next-gen: Expected design changes

Test vehicles of the next-generation Fortuner have been spotted on multiple occasions, offering early indications of the changes planned for the SUV. Images of the camouflaged models suggest that Toyota could retain the current model's fundamental body structure and IMV ladder-frame platform while introducing revised exterior panels and updated styling elements.

The front end is expected to feature a more upright grille with prominent vertical detailing, slimmer upper lighting units and a raised bonnet. Pronounced wheel arches and side steps are also visible in the spy shots, indicating that the SUV could retain its rugged appearance.

At the rear, the updated Fortuner is expected to feature a redesigned tailgate and a connected LED light bar. The final arrangement of the tail-lamps and other lighting elements remains unclear because camouflage conceals parts of the test vehicles.

The overall design direction is expected to follow an approach similar to that of the latest Toyota Hilux, combining updated styling with an established underlying platform.

Toyota Fortuner next-gen: Expected interior and features

The cabin could receive one of the most noticeable upgrades in the new-generation model. According to the expected design direction outlined in reports, the Fortuner could borrow several interior elements from the latest Hilux.

Potential changes include a larger central touchscreen, wireless connectivity features and a fully digital instrument cluster. Toyota could also revise the dashboard layout, cabin materials and control placement to improve usability and the overall interior experience.

Safety technology is another area where the SUV could see improvements. A more comprehensive Toyota Safety Sense package is anticipated on at least some variants, potentially bringing advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance.

However, Toyota has yet to officially confirm the final equipment list for the upcoming Fortuner.

The next-generation Fortuner is expected to continue with the familiar 2.8-litre diesel engine, paired with manual and automatic gearbox options. The four-wheel-drive configuration is also likely to remain available, preserving the SUV's off-road credentials.

These powertrain details remain expectations rather than confirmed specifications for the new model. Toyota is yet to announce the complete mechanical package for the upcoming SUV.

India is expected to receive the updated Fortuner in 2027, although the exact launch date and variant lineup have not been announced. The extent of the changes and the final specifications offered in the Indian market are also yet to be confirmed.

The new model could command revised pricing if the anticipated design, technology and equipment upgrades are introduced. It is expected to continue competing in the premium SUV segment against models such as the Jeep Meridian, Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tayron.

With its global debut scheduled for December 2026, more concrete details about the next-generation Fortuner's design, features and powertrain are likely to emerge as the unveiling approaches.
