Petrol and diesel prices hiked for the third time on Saturday
In Delhi, petrol prices were hiked to Rs 99.51 per litre, up from Rs 98.64 earlier. Diesel prices in the national capital also rose to Rs 92.49 per litre from Rs 91.58. The latest revision has taken the overall increase in petrol and diesel prices to nearly Rs 5 per litre in less than 10 days. Oil marketing companies had restarted fuel price revisions on May 15 after a long pause. Petrol and diesel prices were increased by Rs 3 per litre each on May 15 and by another 90 paise per litre on May 19.Why petrol, diesel prices are rising in India?
The recent increases come as international crude oil markets remain volatile due to geopolitical tensions involving Iran and concerns over disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz, a major global oil shipping route. Rising crude prices generally lead to higher fuel costs in India as the country imports a large share of its oil needs. The continuing upward trend in fuel rates has also triggered fears of higher inflation, especially in transport-heavy sectors such as food delivery, goods movement and public transportation.
