Tired of cockroaches in your kitchen? Try these 4 simple natural repellents using ingredients already at home

Few things are more unpleasant than spotting a cockroach in the kitchen. Apart from being unsettling, cockroaches can move through dirty areas before coming into contact with kitchen surfaces, utensils and food. While commercial insect sprays may offer a quick fix, their strong fumes can be unpleasant, and simply killing or chasing away visible cockroaches may not address the source of the problem.

If you want to try some simple, low-cost measures first, a few ingredients commonly found in the kitchen may help make certain areas less attractive to cockroaches. Bay leaves, cloves, cinnamon and citrus peels are known for their strong aromas and can be used around potential hiding and entry spots.

1. Bay Leaves

Bay leaves are commonly used to add flavour to curries and other dishes, but their strong aroma can also help discourage cockroaches from lingering in certain areas. Take a few dried bay leaves and gently crush them between your palms to release more of their fragrance. Place the crushed leaves in kitchen cabinet corners, along drawer edges and behind or beside large appliances where cockroaches may hide. Replace the leaves about once a week or whenever their smell starts to fade.

2. Whole Cloves
Cloves have a strong, pungent fragrance that can make areas less inviting to cockroaches. Their small size also makes them easy to place in corners and other hard-to-reach spaces. Scatter whole cloves inside spice cabinets, beneath the kitchen sink and around covered garbage bins. They can also be placed near other areas where you have noticed cockroach activity.

3. Cinnamon Powder

Cinnamon has a distinctive aroma and can be used around possible cockroach entry points as a simple home remedy. Sprinkle a small amount of ground cinnamon along windowsills, near doorway gaps and around dark spaces behind the refrigerator. You can also place a few cinnamon sticks on pantry shelves, particularly near food-storage areas. Avoid putting loose cinnamon directly into open food containers, as it can contaminate the food and affect its taste.

4. Fresh Citrus Peels
Don't throw away lemon or orange peels immediately after using the fruit. Their strong citrus scent can be useful for freshening certain areas of the kitchen and may help discourage cockroaches from lingering nearby. Place fresh peels near sink drains, underneath the garbage bin and inside dark storage spaces. Once the peels become dry or start to deteriorate, replace them with fresh ones. Do not leave citrus peels in warm, damp corners for too long, as they can attract mould or other pests.

Keep The Kitchen Dry
Cockroaches are attracted to moisture, so keeping the kitchen dry is an important part of preventing infestations. Wipe water around the sink after washing dishes and check for leaks beneath the sink or around pipes. Also, avoid leaving wet sponges, dishcloths or standing water on kitchen surfaces overnight.

Store Food In Airtight Containers
Open packets of flour, cereals, snacks, sugar and other dry foods can become easy food sources for cockroaches. Transfer frequently used dry ingredients into tightly sealed containers. Keeping food properly covered also makes it easier to identify whether pests have entered a particular storage area.

Take Out Kitchen Waste Regularly

Garbage bins can provide both food and moisture for cockroaches. Use a bin with a properly fitting lid and empty it regularly, especially when it contains food waste. Clean the inside and outside of the bin periodically and wipe the surrounding floor to remove any spills or residue.

Don't Rely Only On Natural Repellents
Bay leaves, cloves, cinnamon and citrus peels may help make certain areas less attractive to cockroaches, but they should not be considered a guaranteed solution for an established infestation. If you are regularly seeing multiple cockroaches, finding droppings or noticing them during the daytime, the problem may require more effective pest-control measures. In such cases, consider using a suitable pest-control product according to its label instructions or contacting a professional pest-control service.
