Lightcast data cited by Fortune shows that postings for forward-deployed engineers increased more than tenfold between January and August 2026 compared with the same period last year. The increase is even larger compared with 2023, with postings rising more than 45-fold.The growth is far ahead of the wider technology job market, which increased by only about 13% year over year during the period. Similar hiring trends have also appeared on LinkedIn and Indeed, according to reporting cited by The New York Times.
Why companies are hiring these AI engineers
Businesses are facing a challenge as they try to introduce advanced AI systems into existing operations. AI models may be powerful, but companies still need to connect them with proprietary data, legacy software and established workflows. Those systems can vary significantly from one organisation to another.Forward-deployed engineers are being hired to address this gap. Dice president Paul Farnsworth told Fortune that the role is increasingly being viewed as a way to connect AI technology with the practical requirements of businesses.
The work can involve configuring AI systems, connecting different software platforms and making sure the technology performs reliably in production.
Median salary crosses Rs 1.6 crore
The rapid growth in demand is accompanied by high salaries. According to Lightcast figures cited by Fortune, the median advertised salary for forward-deployed engineers is above $188,000, which is nearly Rs 1.6 crore.That is considerably higher than the roughly $145,000 typical salary for a traditional software engineering position.
Some companies are offering much higher total compensation. At Anthropic, for example, compensation for certain forward-deployed engineering roles can reportedly reach as much as $400,000, or more than Rs 3 crore.
How to become a forward-deployed engineer
To become a forward-deployed engineer, candidates typically need a strong foundation in software development, APIs, cloud infrastructure, data pipelines and AI or machine learning, along with the ability to understand business problems and work directly with clients. Experience building and deploying AI applications in real-world settings can be useful, especially projects that show measurable results such as reducing costs, saving time or improving productivity. Strong communication, problem-solving and stakeholder-management skills are equally important because the role involves working closely with both technical teams and business users.Palantir's model spreads across Silicon Valley
Palantir remains one of the best-known examples of the model. The company has around four dozen forward-deployed engineering openings involving corporations, defence organisations and governments.The role can involve responsibilities similar to those handled by a startup chief technology officer. Engineers work in small teams and can take ownership of projects from system architecture through discussions with senior client executives.
Palantir has credited this hands-on approach with helping it compete with larger companies by putting engineering talent directly alongside users who understand the business but may not have technical expertise.
The company has also recorded strong financial growth. Palantir's market capitalisation has crossed $400 billion, while its latest quarterly revenue rose 93% year over year to $1.94 billion.
Other technology companies are now following a similar approach. Microsoft, Meta, Google, OpenAI and Anthropic have opened forward-deployed engineering positions. Nvidia and Scale AI have also adopted similar structures in product management and technical architecture.
What skills are needed for the job?
A forward-deployed engineer needs a combination of technical and business skills.The technical side includes coding, machine learning, generative AI, APIs, data pipelines, cloud infrastructure and AI deployment. But technical knowledge alone may not be enough.
Because these engineers work directly with customers, they also need communication skills, problem-solving ability and an understanding of business requirements.
Farnsworth recommends that candidates build a foundation in APIs, data pipelines and cloud infrastructure. They should also learn how to make AI systems work reliably in production.
Simply knowing how to use the newest AI tools is unlikely to set a candidate apart. The greater value comes from applying those tools to a specific business problem and delivering a measurable result.
How existing engineers can prepare
Engineers already working in technology can start preparing for such roles by finding ways to introduce AI into existing workplace processes.Farnsworth suggests tracking the results of these projects, including revenue generated, time saved and errors reduced.
Such measurable outcomes can help demonstrate that an engineer can do more than build technology. They can show that the candidate understands how AI can solve an actual business problem.
As companies move from experimenting with AI to deploying it across their operations, that combination of engineering skills and business understanding is helping make forward-deployed engineering one of the fastest-growing roles in the technology job market.
