Many people dream of growing their own vegetables but often assume it requires a large backyard, expensive tools, or years of experience. Vijay Sharma from Bikaner has proven this wrong.

What started as a simple attempt to grow better-quality cluster beans at home has grown into a thriving 1,500-square-foot garden filled with vegetables, fruits, and medicinal plants. Along the way, he discovered that cluster beans are one of the easiest vegetables for beginners to cultivate.

His gardening journey started because he and his mother were unhappy with the vegetables available in local markets. “The quality of the vegetables in the market is not good,” he was quoted as saying by The Better India.

Determined to find a better alternative, Vijay planted cluster beans at home in 2017. The results exceeded his expectations. The vegetables were fresher, healthier, and more flavourful than anything he had purchased from the market.

Encouraged by the success, he expanded his kitchen garden to include spinach, okra, chillies, and several other crops. During the lockdown, he spent even more time learning about gardening through social media and experimenting with different growing techniques.

Today, his garden boasts more than 150 varieties of plants. Yet despite growing everything from cauliflower to pomegranates, cluster beans remain one of his top recommendations for new gardeners.

Here are the seven tips Vijay follows to grow healthy cluster beans at home.

1. Plant Cluster Beans in the Right Season

According to Vijay, timing is one of the most important factors for success.

Cluster beans thrive in warm and humid weather and perform particularly well during the monsoon season in many parts of India. He recommends that beginners focus on seasonal vegetables instead of trying to force plants to grow outside their natural growing conditions.

When planted during the right season, cluster bean seeds germinate quickly and require minimal effort to establish.

2. Prepare Healthy Soil Before Sowing

A healthy harvest starts with healthy soil.

Vijay prefers using a simple growing medium made from garden soil mixed with cow dung manure or coco peat. This combination helps retain moisture while supplying nutrients that support strong plant growth.

Good soil preparation also reduces the chances of problems later in the growing cycle and gives seedlings a stronger foundation.

3. Choose Deep Containers With Proper Drainage

One of the biggest lessons Vijay learned is that plants do not care about fancy pots.

Over the years, he has transformed old drums, damaged plastic containers, discarded tyres, and even homemade cement planters into growing spaces.

For cluster beans, he says depth and drainage matter most. The roots need adequate room to develop, and excess water should be able to escape easily.

Whether you have a balcony, terrace, or small garden, a deep grow bag or container can work effectively.

4. Water Regularly During Early Growth

Proper watering plays a key role in the early stages of growth.

Although Vijay now uses a drip irrigation system in his garden, he believes a simple watering can is more than sufficient for home gardeners.

The goal is to keep the soil consistently moist without making it waterlogged. Too much standing water around the roots can harm the plant.

During rainy periods or highly humid weather, watering requirements may decrease depending on natural rainfall and soil conditions.

5. Ensure Plenty of Sunlight

Cluster beans love sunlight.

While they thrive in humid weather, they still need several hours of direct sunlight every day to produce healthy growth and abundant yields.

Balconies, terraces, rooftops, and gardens that receive good sunlight are ideal locations.

Adequate sunlight encourages flowering, which eventually leads to more pods for harvesting. Plants grown in heavy shade often produce fewer beans.

6. Spend a Few Minutes Checking Your Plants Daily

One simple habit has helped Vijay maintain a productive garden over the years: regular observation.

Every day, he spends a few minutes inspecting his plants, removing dry leaves, checking for signs of stress, and carrying out light pruning whenever necessary.

“The vegetable plants need occasional trimming. Watering the plants is equally important for their healthy growth,” he says.

These small daily tasks may seem minor, but they can help identify and solve problems before they affect the harvest.

7. Harvest Pods While They Are Young and Tender

The timing of harvest can make a big difference in flavour.

Vijay recommends picking cluster beans while the pods are still young and tender. At this stage, they are more enjoyable to eat and have a better texture.

Regular harvesting also encourages the plant to continue producing fresh pods over a longer period, providing a steady supply for the kitchen.

From a Few Seeds to a Flourishing Garden

For Vijay Sharma, gardening has become much more than a way to grow vegetables.

What started as an effort to avoid poor-quality produce has evolved into a rewarding lifestyle. His home garden now supplies fresh food, reduces dependence on market vegetables, and provides a sense of peace and satisfaction every day.

His journey also highlights an important lesson for aspiring gardeners: sometimes all it takes is a handful of seeds, a sunny corner, and a little consistency to grow something remarkable.

And in Vijay's case, it all started with cluster beans.
